Microplastics are everywhere. What should we actually do about them?

HHappy OrbisPublished Updated

Microplastics have become one of the most recognisable pollution issues in the world.

But awareness alone solves very little.

Where should society concentrate first: products, wastewater, textiles, tyres, packaging or cleanup?

Which interventions could realistically make the biggest difference?

A good answer should consider what a measure prevents, what it costs and what happens to the material afterwards. Capturing particles in a treatment plant is only part of the story if they are transferred somewhere else. People also need choices they can afford. We would like to hear from researchers, wastewater operators, manufacturers and anyone who has tried to reduce unnecessary plastic in everyday life.

• Which source would you tackle first? • How would you measure improvement? • What trade-offs should be explained?
